Our Mission/Vision
The core mission of the science department is to encourage inquiry, provide hands-on learning opportunities, and support personal growth for students. Students learn how to use the scientific method to better their scientific literacy, and general curiosity towards the world. Students lead by communicating and overcoming obstacles together in group projects. Students also serve through science demonstration teams and clubs.
Resources and Enrichment Opportunities
-
Science Bowl: Merit has a team of science enthusiasts led by Mrs. Herlehy. They compete with other high school teams across the state in jeopardy-style quiz bowls about general science topics. 9-12 grade.
-
Science Fair: Mrs. Herlehy also holds a science fair for 7th and 8th grade students. The winners at the school level have a chance to compete at a regional and state level. 7-8 grade.
-
Science Demo Team: Mrs. Xanthe Hardy has a class period affectionately called "Demo" (Investigation Science Demo). The students learn to create exciting science shows for the school and community. They frequent libraries and elementary schools, sharing their love for science (and explosions!) with the next generation of bright young minds. 11-12 grade (Chemistry prerequisite).
-
TSA (Technology Student Association). Though officially under CTE, the TSA Club is advised by Mr. Buckley and has a lot of cross-cutting concepts and projects in STEM. Our coding team went to nationals last year and we are focusing on robotics and engineering competitions this year as well. 9-12 grade.
