College Courses
Whether you want to get your General Education Certificate, earn an Associate's Degree by graduation, or just take a few courses to save money on future tuition, check out Merit Academy’s college course opportunities. We collaborate with UVU, Snow and Southern Utah University to provide face-to-face, live broadcast, and online college courses to support your educational goals.
The links below provide information about the concurrent enrollment program and available courses. If you have additional questions, please contact Kristi Gilbert.

Program Overview
The concurrent enrollment program, which is funded under an annual state appropriation, makes college courses available to high school students for both high school and college credit. The high school credit counts toward graduation and becomes part of a student’s high school transcript. The college credit counts toward a certificate or degree program and is recorded on the student’s college transcript.
Concurrent enrollment brings college opportunities to high schools. Qualified high school students can take college courses through face-to-face, live-interactive or Livestream, and online courses:

-
Face-to-Face classes are taught by Merit teachers qualified by UVU to teach the college class in the high school during the school day. Students use Canvas to complete assignments.
-
The Live Interactive and Livestream classes are live broadcasts taught at specific times by a UVU or Snow College professor. Students are expected to attend all classes, and roll is taken both at Merit and the corresponding university. Students complete assignments on Canvas.
-
The Online classes are taught by UVU/SUU professors on a prerecorded platform. All information is in Canvas.

IMPORTANT: Please note these are standard college courses. Therefore, there may be little direction or assistance from the professor. Students are asked to follow along in class, take notes and collaborate with fellow students. Students must be self-disciplined and self-directed to do well. If students have questions or requests, they can reach out to their professors through Canvas email.

Concurrent Enrollment Scholarships
The following two scholarships are specifically related to the concurrent enrollment program:
The Opportunity Scholarship encourages students to complete advanced courses while in high school to prepare academically for college. Students must apply during their senior year of high school. This scholarship can help cover the cost of tuition and fees after other state aid is applied, with a maximum award amount set annually.
The First Credential Scholarship (Formerly PRIME) is awarded to students who complete required concurrent enrollment (CE), career and technical education (CTE) coursework, or complete a youth apprenticeship in high school.
For information on additional Utah Scholarships and Aid programs, see the Utah System of High Education website.

Concurrent Enrollment Requirements
The concurrent enrollment program specifically targets high school Juniors and Seniors with a 3.0 GPA or higher for academic subjects and 2.0 for CTE courses.
If a student does not meet the GPA requirement, or if they are home-schooled and do not have an accredited transcript, they can participate if they have a composite ACT score of 22.
Students only need to be enrolled in one core or elective high school class at Merit to take concurrent enrollment. classes.
Freshman and sophomore students, as well as students who do not meet the minimum GPA requirement, may submit the Concurrent Enrollment Petition Form to petition for enrollment.

The following are key indicators for success:

Student
-
Shows strong study skills in time management, preparing for and taking exams, using information resources, taking class notes, and allocating sufficient time to complete tasks well.
-
Uses critical thinking skills such as inquisitiveness, analysis, interpretation, problem solving, reasoning, and precision and accuracy.
-
Monitors, evaluates, and directs own learning and takes personal responsibility for success in school.
-
A higher GPA (3.0) is highly recommended for success.

Parent/Guardian
-
Supports the student’s participation in the Concurrent Enrollment program.
-
Believes the student is capable of understanding college-level material and rigor.

School Counselor
-
Recommends the student for Concurrent Enrollment and confirms that the student has good attendance, behaves well in the classroom, and is capable of understanding college-level material, producing quality assignments, and performing well on exams.

Homeschool Requirements
According to the State Concurrent Enrollment Handbook (2016), “Home-schooled students are eligible for concurrent courses with principal permission from the high school they would attend. They are subject to the same rules and requirements that apply to a full-time student’s participation in public education, such that they are counted in the Average Daily Membership. A Home-schooled student is officially excused from compulsory public school attendance. However, to comply with the rules governing the state concurrent enrollment program, a home-schooled student must affiliate with a high school to be counted in the Average Daily Membership and to ensure that the concurrent grade appears on both a high school and college transcript. These are both requirements for state funding.”
